microtheatricality is the means by which we perform fragments of life in environments insufficient to exactly reproduce, or even passably echo, them as they appear to us. it is the diy tape scene of the 1980s, where characters resonated in the direct-to-portastudio bleeps of inexpensive analog synthesizers and acid house began to brew. the deadpan performer, as one imagines listening to algebra suicide or listening to the indistinct noises of an agog tape smashing into guitars, an exasperated death metal vocalist, a makeshift loop five-starcled into oblivion with bent circuits. microtheatricality has since transformed to fit a more devyn smith-optimized environment, where trauma manifests unignorably on the sp-555, a mixture of mp3s and physical media interspersed with homemade lyrics and text-to-speech voices - disembodied conveyors for the depersonalized side of the net. now - or rather well over six years ago as of 2022 - jalentuna of sp-forums fame concludes a vast, 24-minute piece on the pina da nina and the santamaria by gutturally screeching over 2 nina, now treated as the detritus of his own decade-long online presence, tinnily expelled from strained macbook speakers into a microphone. this is something of a small world, a canon, a vast importance within a few megabytes or several minutes of tape or a full cd mixtape. we operate in cd-r releases, not ariana grande vinyl. we are microtheatrical.
